The Missed Connections Experiment

A missed connections inspired comic via Laughing Squid

I spend too much time reading the missed connections ads on craigslist. I’m intrigued by how hopeful these people are. Posting to missed connections seems a lot like throwing a message in a bottle into the sea and hoping for the best. The posts on Ann Arbor’s missed connections range from the creepy, to the hilarious, to the grammatically incorrect. I think this is my favorite ad so far:
SICU Nurse - m4w - 26 (St. Joseph Hospital)

so this is kind of wierd but what the hell.....my buddy was in a very bad car wreck in the first week or so of December and you were one of his nurses. you have blonde hair and your name starts with S. We smiled at eachother but never struck up a conversation as I was tied up talking to my friend's parents. You weren't working again the other times I went to visit. If you see this and are interested send me a note with a pic so i can tell its you.
I was with my friend Rose at the bar last week when she proposed a new use for missed connections: significant other generation. The idea is pretty simple. You brainstorm all the attributes of your ideal SO down to what they would be wearing and where and when you might run into them. Then you write a missed connections ad describing an imaginary encounter and see if they respond.

Brilliant idea, right?
